For starters, the university has a population of over 31,000 students. This makes it the first largest University in Chicago and the third largest University in Illinois. Of those 31,000, 85% of the students consist of commuters. However, since Chicago is a very large city, many of these “commuters” could be students living in apartments right by campus.

The average tuition rate for 4 year universities in-state students is $12,598, while for out-of-state students is $13,607. As shown above, the tuition rate at UIC is $13,664 for in-state students and $26,520 for out-of-state students. There is clearly a very difference between UIC out-of-state students and all other 4 year universities in Illinois. This could account for the fact that UIC is in the city of Chicago while other colleges such as University of Illinois, Illinois State, and Bradley University are further out from the city.
