Google Trends: Front Runners for Democratic Race &

Donald Trump’s Only Republican Opponent Thus Far

Front Runners for Democratic Race for Presidency 2020

The 2016 Primary Election marked a historical turning point for Bernie Sanders. He came very close to beating Hillary Clinton. Due to his popularity among the younger generation, he has many more voters because many of them have turned the legal voting age since the last Primary Election. However, unlike the last election, the 2020 Primary Election will be more challenging for each individual democratic candidate due to the number of people running for presidency from the Democratic Party. Although, according to the New York Times, the two front runners from the Democratic Party are Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris. Below is a Google Trends chart of the last month from 2/5/19-3/5/19.

As we can see in the chart, Kamala Harris had a bit of a rise above Bernie Sanders early to mid February. This is more than likely due to the fact that Kamala Harris announced her run for presidency towards the end of January, meaning people were still talking about her early February. Then, when Bernie Sanders announced his run for presidency in 2020, searches for him skyrocketed. Almost 3 weeks later and Bernie is still surpassing Kamala Harris. Will Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders be the top two democratic contenders for presidency closer to 2020? We will have to wait and see.

Donald Trump’s Only Republican Opponent Thus Far

Unlike the 14 individuals from the Democratic Party running for Presidency in 2020, the Republican Party has only 2 contenders, one of which is the current president. Donald Trump was highly doubted when he first announced his run for President in 2015. People thought that Trump would never become president because of the many republican candidates running for presidency back in 2016. However, that obviously was a misconception.

As displayed in the chart above, Trump is clearly extremely popular, especially compared to his opponent William F. Weld. Weld is known for being the former Governor of Massachusetts. He has republican views on most things, but his viewpoint is not nearly as extreme as Trump. Weld also supports medicinal and recreational marijuana use which could be a problem because most republicans are anti-marijuana.

Since the 2020 election is still a year and a half out, we could potentially see more Republicans announce their run for presidency. Unlike the Democrats right now, the Republican party has one clear leader and that is the current president. As previously stated, since more people from the millennial age group are able to vote in the 2020 election, we may have a new democratic president.
